Protesters block Pan-American Highway in Tacna province

On 30 October 2008 thousands of protesters blocked the Pan-American Highway in the southernmost Tacna province. Protesters demonstrated against a recent congressional decision to cut mining royalties for the province. The funds will be diverted to the Moquegua province, located just north of Tacna. There were no reports of violence; however, some traffic disruption occurred due to the highway blockage.
