Lima Transport Providers Strike
19 Jan 2010
On 18 January 2010 transportation providers staged a strike in Lima, although officials claim that approximately 90 percent of union members did not participate in the labour action and that the strike did not significantly impede ground travel in Lima.
The strike is scheduled to carry over into 19 January. Union leaders claim that at least 300 public transportation companies in Lima and Callao plan to join the strike, parking approximately 50,000 vehicles in the capital. Though authorities do not expect high turnout in the 19 January protest, they have deployed police officers and military forces into the streets of the capital to maintain order.
