24-hour national strike
10 Jul 2008
The General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP) staged a 24-hour national strike on 9 July 2008 to protest the government's economic and social policies. Disruptions to transportation occurred across the country, and approximately 200 people were detained. Overall, the protests were peaceful. However, protesters in Puerto Maldonado, a city in southeastern Peru located in the Madre de Dios region, looted and set fire to offices belonging to the local government.
