Military installation attacked by gunmen
07 Nov 2008
Gunmen trying to protect crude oil thieves in Nigeria's Niger Delta attacked a military installation near Clough Creek in Bayelsa state on 6 November 2008. The gunmen opened fire on the installation and killed one civilian before they were repelled. The attack was apparently carried out in order to create leeway for illegal oil "bunkerers," criminals who have taken advantage of the region's relative lawlessness to steal crude oil. The incident was the first to occur recently in the western part of the Niger Delta; the majority of the recent attacks have taken place in Rivers state. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
