Fuel shortage causes flight delays

30 Apr 2009
Some local airlines have reported slight flight delays at Lagos' Murtala Muhammed International Airport due to the scarcity of aviation fuel. The carriers, including Afrijet and Chanchangi Airlines, are experiencing approximately 30-minute flight delays due to the inability to access JET A1 aviation fuel at the facility. Reports indicate that fuel marketers are asking the affected airlines to pay their accumulated fuel debts, stating that the product will only be provided to them on a cash basis. Meanwhile, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has stated that the shortage is only temporary and will likely be fully corrected within days. Fuel marketers had earlier stopped the importation of aviation fuel as a result of the suspension of petroleum subsidy payments, but they are expected to resume full import activity soon, after recently reaching an agreement with the federal government. Petrol stations nationwide are also reporting petrol shortages, which are apparently the result of an attack on a major Lagos depot that forced the suspension of operations earlier in the week. The shortages have primarily affected Lagos and its immediate vacinity, but fuel scarcity has also been reported in Port Harcourt and Abuja.
