FCO warn against travel to Niger Delta
18 Jul 2008
Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown signed an agreement on 17 July 2008 that will send British military experts to the Niger Delta to help local law enforcement deal with the region's increasing violence. Many Nigerians, however, reject the deal, stating that Brown is "clueless" on the root causes of the violence in the Niger Delta -- including the struggle for social justice, environmental rights and resource control -- which increased law enforcement cannot solve.
