Doctors suspend strike
08 Jan 2009
Lagos doctors suspended their indefinite strike at the city's public hospitals on 8 January 2009. The doctors began the strike on 5 January after the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum in protest over poor hospital conditions, equipment and low salaries. The Medical Guild doctors reportedly decided to call off the strike after appeals from prominent local citizens, including the former governor of the state, senior medical colleagues and religious figures. The union also stated that the government has begun taking action to satisfy the doctors' demands in hopes of preventing future similar actions. The Medical Guild has ordered its doctors to return to work immediately, which should return all services to normal in the coming days.
