Curfew in western state of Niger
09 Jun 2010
On 8 June 2010 authorities imposed a curfew in Niger state in western Nigeria due to ongoing ethnic and religious violence. Reports indicate that the violence broke out on 6 June and continued through 7 June in Yelwa village. At least 12 people were killed in the unrest and six others were reportedly abducted; a mosque was also burned down. Authorities believe that the unrest is reprisal violence by Fulani herdsmen after villagers killed several of their kinsmen and stole their cattle. The curfew is in effect from dusk to dawn in Yelwa village; the length of the curfew varies in other parts of Niger state.
