Authorities in Lagos warned of an increase in crime as the holiday season approaches
04 Nov 2008
On 4 November 2008 authorities in Lagos warned of an increase in crime as the holiday season approaches. Over the past week, authorities noted that robberies of motorists and residences have significantly increased. Criminals commonly operate on motorcycles to rob victims in traffic jams or near residences. The proximity of a police station apparently also does not deter criminals, as several incidents have been reported near police stations. The increase in crime comes soon after the Lagos state government donated 10 armored personnel carriers, 1,000 AK-47 rifles, 1,000 bulletproof vests and helmets to the state's Rapid Response Squad to combat crime. Affected areas of Lagos include the Ajao Estate end of the international airport road, Ire Akari Estate in Isolo, Apapa, Omole, Ogba, Ojodu, Ilupeju, Agege, Egbeda and the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
