Bank workers go on strike

National bank workers began a two-day strike on 30 June 2010 as part of an ongoing wage and working conditions dispute. Union representatives stated that bank employees in Niamey, the capital, and in other major cities throughout the country are observing the strike. Neither the government nor bank officials have called for negotiations. Workers indicated that they will continue protest actions if authorities do not attempt to address their grievances. Banking services will likely be affected throughout the country over the two-day period.
