Supporters throw rocks at two politicians wives
06 Nov 2008
Supporters of President Daniel Ortega threw rocks at the wives of two Nicaraguan politicians while they were campaigning on 6 November 2008; the two women sustained injuries. The victims' husbands -- who are members of an opposition party running for mayor and deputy mayor of Managua -- stated that the perpetrators were sympathizers to Ortega's ruling Sandinista party. Authorities arrested several suspects in the incident. Nicaragua's local elections will be held on 9 November. Sporadic violence between the opposition parties and the Sandinista party supporters has marred election campaigning, leading to fears of more widespread violence during the election and its immediate aftermath.
