Sandinista Party accused of voter fraud
12 Nov 2008
Supporters and opponents of President Daniel Ortega clashed in Managua on 11 November 2008 following the release of preliminary municipal election results. Opposition supporters accused the ruling Sandinista Party of voter fraud as local monitors reported widespread irregularities. Reports indicate that thousands of rioters attacked each other with clubs and stones; gunfire was also reported. At least two people were killed, six others were injured and 30 were arrested in the incident. Preliminary results showed that Sandinistas have won elections in the majority of the country's municipalities. The local elections were seen as a popularity test for Ortega, who critics report is becoming increasingly authoritarian.
