Anti-government protest in Managua turned violent
03 Oct 2008
According to reports on 3 October 2008, an anti-government protest in Managua turned violent when pro-government supporters attempted to forcibly stop the demonstration. A group of student protesters gathered outside the Multinoticias Channel 4 television station, denouncing the "dictatorship" of President Daniel Ortega. The station's reporters attempted to stop the protest, and called members of the local Council of Citizen Power (CPC) when the protest continued. The Ortega supporters -- nicknamed Orteguistas -- shoved and hit the students to get them to leave the premises. No injuries were reported in the incident. This was the second incident of street violence between Orteguistas and anti-government supporters in the past two weeks.
