Truck drivers protest through city centres
07 Jul 2008
More than 4,000 trucks converged on the major city centers in New Zealand on 4 July 2008, in protest over the increase in road user charges. The hike in costs will also add more than 40 cents a gallon to fuel prices. Reports indicate that the protest brought the main highways in Wellington, the capital, and Auckland, the country's largest city, to a halt during morning rush hour. The truck drivers ended their strike at 0900 local time (2100 UTC).
