STRONG EARTHQUAKE HITS SOUTH ISLAND, PROMPTING SMALL TSUNAMI

A strong earthquake struck off the coast of New Zealand's South Island, just after 2020 local time on 15 July 2009. The epicentre was located approximately 100 miles / 60 km west of Invercargill and 3 miles/5 km below ground. Estimates of the quake's magnitude vary from 6.6 to 8.2. The quake was followed by a 5.8 magnitude aftershock in the same area.
