Earthquake hits New Caledonia

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit New Caledonia at approximately 1827 local time (0727 UTC) on 15 January 2009. The epicentre of the quake was located 260 mi/420 km east of Noumea, at a depth of 25 mi/40 km. No tsunami warning was issued; however, officials stated that local tidal waves could affect neighbouring coasts. No injuries or damage have been reported.
