Violent protests in Kathmandu
12 Sep 2008
On 12 September 2008 violent protests occurred in Kathmandu as participants in a joint strike called by the Nepali Congress party and its student wing the Nepal Students Union clashed with police officers. The protesters were demonstrating over the death of a youth in Balkumari town, which organizers say occurred while the individual was in police custody. The protesters blocked major intersections in the city, and reports indicate that some demonstrators clashed with police in different areas of the city, including near the Shankar Dev Campus. At least 50 students were detained following the demonstration.
