Student strike cripples public transport

On 24 July 2008 a nationwide student strike crippled public transportation in Kathmandu for a second straight day as student unions demonstrate for a decrease in transportation fares. Protesters affiliated with eight student unions have blocked vehicular traffic in Kathmandu and the Capital valley area. Students targeted public transportation operators who defied the strike by throwing stones at their vehicles. Barricades of burning tires erected by the students also caused traffic disruptions. Private transportation is not being targeted by the students.
