Police shoot two people demonstrating over curfew

On 14 March 2009 police officers in Dang district, located approximately 260 mi/420 km southwest of Kathmandu, shot and killed two protesters who were demonstrating against a curfew. Police officers had implemented the curfew during an attempt to transport thousands of people who have been stranded as a result of strikes that have lasted for more than two weeks. Police officers stated that they fired in self defense after protesters started attacking officers and bus passengers. At least eight police officers were also injured during the incident.
