Tropical storm Alex hits Mexico and Belize
28 Jun 2010
Tropical Storm Alex struck Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and the coast of Belize on 27 June 2010, dumping heavy rains across the region. Alex weakened to a tropical depression as it moved over land, but has since regained tropical storm strength. According to meteorologists at Wilkens Weather Technologies, Alex is projected to continue moving northwest through the Bay of Campeche, and current models show it strengthening to hurricane status before making landfall in northern Mexico on 1 July. The potential also remains that the storm could track north, hitting the southern coast of Texas in the United States. The storm is expected to begin impacting the coastal areas of Tamaulipas and Veracruz with heavy rain on the evening of 29 June. As of 0900 UTC on 28 June, Alex was located approximately 75 mi/115 km west of Campeche with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph/45 kt.
