Tropical Storm Alex caused heavy rainfall in Monterrey's metropolitan area on 1 July 2010, triggering heavy flooding. The Santa Catarina and La Silla rivers overflowed their banks, cutting off several bridges and roads, including parts of Constitution Avenue (Monterrey's major thoroughfare), as well as the Saltillo-Monterrey, Ciudad Victoria-Monterrey and Lonares-San Roberto highways. Monterrey's International Airport remained open, but some airlines cancelled flights. More than 4,000 people had to evacuate their residences, more than 60,000 residents experienced power outages, and the water supply was cut off to tens of thousands of residents in Santa Catarina and Garcia. According to the latest statistics, five people were killed and three are missing in Monterrey's metropolitan area.
