Travellers should anticipate transportation disruptions in up coming demonstrations

26 Jan 2009
More than 30,000 protesters attended a rally in the Plaza of the Constitution (Zocalo) in the Historico Centro area of Mexico City on 25 January 2009. Leftist leader Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador organized the rally to launch a new campaign which he claims is aimed at defending the rights of the poor amid the global economic downturn. Obrador plans to stage several more rallies in Mexico City over the next two months to demand greater government action, including lowering electricity, gasoline and diesel fuel prices. Rallies are scheduled at the Finance Ministry on 3 February, the Luz y Fuerza del Centro electricity company and the Federal Electricity Association on 17 February, the Mexican Association of Banks on 3 March, the Monument to Lazaro Cardenas on 18 March and the Zocalo on 22 March. Travellers should anticipate transportation disruptions in these areas.
