Travellers may encounter more frequent checkpoints when travelling on roads in Cancun following seiure of police headquaters
10 Feb 2009
Mexican troops seized control of the municipal police headquarters in Cancun on 9 February 2009. Soldiers detained Cancun's police chief for questioning regarding the recent murder of a former general on the Cancun-Merida highway on 3 February. The Mexican military has carried out security operations in the city since the assassination. Checkpoints have been reported on roads in and around the city, though the situation has not significantly affected tourist areas. The Mexican military temporarily placed Quintana Roo state police officers in charge of patrolling the city while soldiers audited the municipal police force's weapons.
