Nationwide transportation strike announced for 16th February

Mexico's National Confederation of Transportation Workers have announced it will stage a massive 24-hour nationwide strike on 16 February 2009 demanding that the government reduce the price of diesel fuel. The strike will include more than 500,000 taxi, bus and truck drivers. It has also be suggested that the union may launch an indefinite strike on 18 February if the government does not meet its demands. Travellers are likely to experience significant transportation disruptions throughout Mexico as a result of the strike. Workers may well obstruct major highways and roads throughout the country causing further disruption.
