Higher military presence in Acapulco likely following shotout.

08 Jun 2009
Travellers are likely to observe a more visible military presence in Acapulco in the coming days folowing a shootout in western part of the city over the weekekend. Reports suggest that 16 gunmen and two soldiers died although it is unclear what prompted the shootout. One report stated that the gun battle began after the military received a tip about four Guerrero police officers being held hostage inside a house. Travellers to Acapulco should avoid staying at hotels on the western end of the bay (especially in the Caleta area) and should exercise heightened vigilance if travelling outside of their hotels at night. The incident has not affected overall security conditions in Mexico's other popular tourist destinations, including Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Cancun and Cozumel.
