Farmers across the country protest over fuel prices

Farmers protested throughout Mexico on 26 January 2009 to demand the government lower diesel fuel prices. Protests occurred in Campeche, Chilpancingo, Villahermosa, Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chetumal, Cuervanvaca, Xalapa and Txacala. There were no reports of violence. Farmers in Chihuahua state plan to march to Ciudad Juarez in the coming days and have threatened to block bridges along the U.S.-Mexico border. Farmers also plan to hold a large-scale protest in Mexico City on 30 January. Travelers should anticipate transportation disruptions near the Zocalo in the Centro area and near government buildings.
