3 killed & 50 injured in Independence Day explosions

Several explosions were reported at a large Mexican Independence Day celebration in the city of Morelia in Michoacan state on 15 September 2008. The explosions ripped through a crowd of people at approximately 2300 local time (0500 UTC on 16 September). Police officials stated that at least three people were killed and 50 others injured in the blasts. Local news sources speculated that the explosions were caused by grenades thrown into the crowd. It is not known who was responsible for the attack, but the city has been increasingly affected by violence related to drug gangs in recent years. President Felipe Calderon released a statement shortly after the incident, condemning the violence and urging support for the people of Michoacan.
