A coup occurred in Mauritania on 3 August 2005. The situation in the country appears to have stabilized somewhat, but further instability cannot be ruled out. Travelers to Mauritania are advised to exercise caution, and pay close attention to developments in the country. Travelers should be flexible, and be prepared to alter their plans at short notice.
Mauritania shares with the rest of the region a threat from international terrorism to visibly western interests. Travelers should be aware of the global risk of indiscriminate attacks, which could be against civilian targets, including places frequented by foreigners.
