Public transport workers launch strike
14 Jul 2008
Public transport workers in Malta launched a strike on 14 July 2008. The Malta Transport Federation called for the strike to protest issues relating to hearse licensing. Buses, mini-vans, white taxis and hearses are all observing the strike, with drivers gathering in various areas before converging in Valletta, the capital, to protest. Taxi drivers parked in front of Malta International Airport (LMML/MLA) before beginning the caravan. The Malta Transport Federation has warned that the strike will continue until the liberalization of the hearse sector is reversed. Traffic disruptions are being reported in the areas of Msida, Blata l-Bajda, Sliema, St. Julian’s and Marsa. Isolated clashes with police officers have also been reported in front of Castille palace.
