Supporters of Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim will hold a rally on 1 July
01 Jul 2008
Reports indicate that supporters of Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim will hold a rally on 1 July 2008 in protest over renewed allegations of sodomy and corruption leveled against him. Recently, a male aide accused Anwar of sodomy, forcing the opposition leader to seek refuge in the Turkish Embassy. Anwar claims the allegations are part of a plot to prevent him from seriously challenging the ruling government after he announced plans to re-enter the Parliament. Previously, Anwar spent six years in prison on accusations of sodomy and corruption before the charges were overturned and he was released in 2004. Anwar is also planning to file police reports against the police chief and attorney general for their roles in the alleged plot.
