Kuala Lumpur airport temporarily evacuated

09 Jan 2009
Kuala Lumpur International Airport's (WMKK/KUL) Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) -- which is located approximately 13 mi/20 km from the main airport -- was evacuated on 9 January 2009 after a fire broke out in a duty-free shop. Reports indicate that thick smoke at the terminal forced all passengers and airport staff to evacuate. The fire, which broke out at approximately 1115 local time (0315 UTC), was apparently caused by sparks from nearby construction work. The fire was immediately put out and airport operations resumed by 1245 local time (0445 UTC). However, two- to three-hour flight delays are expected throughout the day.
