6.0 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE STRIKES NEAR TANZANIAN BORDER

On 20 December 2009 an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 struck Malawi near the Tanzanian border. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the quake at 0119 local time (2319 GMT on 19 December) at a depth of approximately 9 mi/15 km. It was centered approximately 90 mi/140 km south-southeast of Mbeya, Tanzania. At least three people were killed and another 300 sustained injuries when a number of buildings near the epicenter collapsed.
