Potential for further unrest remains high.

28 Jan 2009
Antananarivo Mayor Andry Rajoelina suspended ongoing protests in the capital on 27 January 2009 after one of his supporters was killed during riots the previous day. Reports indicate that at least two people were killed and 17 others were injured on 26 January as anti-government protesters burnt down the state radio station and looted shops. Rajoelina initially called for more protests on 27 January, but later urged that people stay home unless they intend to hold peaceful demonstrations. The protests came after President Marc Ravalomanana shut down the opposition television and radio stations for broadcasting alleged anti-government sentiments and sparking the unrest. Despite calls from Ravalomanana to conduct bilateral talks to forestall future violence, Rajoelina has refused to meet with the president until those who are responsible for the death of his supporter are punished
