Cyclone makes landfall
20 Jan 2009
Tropical Cyclone Eric made landfall over Madagascar's eastern Fenerive-Est region on 19 January. The cyclone closed government buildings, schools and shops in the area, and power supplies were deliberately suspended to prevent incidents. However, there have been no reports of major damage or injuries and the cyclone is moving southward over the southern Indian Ocean.
On 20 January Tropical Cyclone Fanele was located in the Mozambique Channel, approaching Madagascar's west coast. Heavy rains have already been reported over the western Sofia region, which have left 250 people homeless. The cyclone has maximum sustained winds of 92 mph/80 kt with gusts up to 115 mph/100 kt. Massive rainfall is expected over the coming days, significantly affecting traffic and business in the region. The cyclone is expected to strengthen as it travels over the Morombe region before dissipating over the island.
