Curfew currently in effect

A curfew is currently in effect between 22:00 to 04:00. and the FCO are advising all British nationals in Madagascar to abide by this curfew.
The mayor of Antananarivo announced at a rally on Saturday 31 January 2009 that he would run the country's affairs and that the army should take its orders from him, not President Ravalomanana. The President subsequently dismissed the Mayor on Tuesday 3 February. Further demonstrations in support of the mayor took place on Saturday 7 February. When demonstrators sought to enter a presidential palace the security forces opened fire. Approximately 30 people were reported to be dead. On Wednesday 11 February a demonstration in support of the President was held in Mahamasima which reportedly attracted a crowd of around 40,000. The President and Mayor both held rallies in Antananarivo on Monday 16 February. The situation remains fluid and there is a continued possibility of violence.
The FCO continue to advise against all travel to Madagascar
