Bombs found near U.N base
12 Jan 2009
On 11 January 2009 explosives were found hidden inside a garbage truck in front of a U.N. base in Tibnine, located in southern Lebanon. A sniffer dog alerted peacekeepers to the explosives during a check of the truck, in which the drivers were attempting to enter the base. Authorities stated that a "moderate" amount of plastic explosives were hidden inside a tool box. The two passengers, both Lebanese nationals, were handed over to Lebanese security forces for further questioning.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has been on a heightened state of alert since December 2008, when it received information regarding an imminent terror threat. The peacekeeping force has been targeted in several attacks in recent years.
