Authorities discover rockets aimed at Israel

29 Dec 2008
Lebanese authorities discovered on 25 December 2008 eight Katyusha rockets aimed at Israel. The rockets were found in the southern town of Naqura, located in the border region between Lebanon and Israel that is supposed to be patrolled by the U.N. peacekeeping force. Sources did not specify how authorities were alerted to the rockets, which were reportedly armed with timers and were all of different calibre. Although Hizballah maintains a very strong presence in southern Lebanon, it is not known if the group has any connection to the rockets; additionally, it is unknown whether the rockets are connected to the recent developments in the Gaza Strip. Israeli officials have long been on alert along the northern border with Lebanon due to fears of a potential attack by Hizballah.
