Two Kenyan activists shot dead

Unidentified gunmen killed two Kenyan activists in central Nairobi on 5 March 2009. The activists worked for the Oscar Foundation, a human rights group that campaigns against extra-judicial police killings. Government officials have accused the foundation of operating as a front for the Mungiki crime gang, which staged a protest in Nairobi earlier on 5 March. Other activist groups alleged that the government was responsible for the murders, but local officials denied those claims. The killings sparked small protests in the city, during which a student was killed. A United National representative called for an investigation into the murders.
