Minibus Drivers Launch 3 Day Strike

Minibus drivers launched a nationwide three-day strike on 4 January 2010 protesting police corruption. Minibuses -- locally called matatus -- are the primary form of public transportation in many locations, and the labor action has caused significant disruptions. Many workers have had to stay home due to the strike. Some minibuses are operating despite the strike, but are charging significantly higher rates. In addition, drivers who continue to operate during the strike have reportedly received threats. Police have been put on high alert and have been deployed along certain routes to prevent attacks.
