KENYA AIRWAYS EMPLOEES PLAN TO STRIKE
13 Aug 2009
The Aviation and Allied Workers Union, which represents 5,000 employees of Kenya Airways, plans to launch a strike beginning at midnight on 13 August 2009. Kenya's Industrial Court had issued a temporary stay that blocked the union from launching a strike until another hearing is held on 17 August. However, the union, which has ignored the court's previous orders, plans to proceed with the strike. The union has demanded a 130-percent pay increase. Kenya Airlines has stated that normal operations will continue, though the claim appears doubtful and significant disruptions are expected at Kenyan airports. The union represents employees -- including security officers, firefighters and cargo handlers -- who provide services for the Kenya Airports Authority.
