Propeller-driven Cessna 206 aircraft crashed in a remote region on Mount Kilimanjaro

On 9 November 2008 authorities in Kenya announced that a single engine propeller-driven Cessna 206 aircraft crashed in a remote region on Mount Kilimanjaro. Reports indicate that the aircraft was carrying four tourists on a sightseeing tour around the mountain when the crash occurred. According to aviation officials, the four tourists and the pilot were killed in the mishap. The Kenyan Civil Aviation Authority stated that that the four tourists were Italians and that the aircraft took off from a tourist camp in the Kyulu Hills on the Tanzanian side of the mountain. No other details were immediately available.
Truckers at Malaba boarder post continue to strike

On 21 October 2008 truckers at the Malaba border post between Kenya and Uganda are continuing a strike to protest the condition of the customs parking lot. The strike, which started on 20 October, froze trade between the two countries. The drivers are trying to express their concerns over the lot and the road leading to it, stating that accidents have occurred as a result of the poor conditions. Traffic between other border points was not affected, however, Malaba is the main control point for goods and services between the two countries.
Somali Islamists threatened to attack targets inside Kenya

On 16 October 2008 Somali Islamists threatened to attack targets inside Kenya if the Kenyan government follows through on a proposal to train approximately 10,000 Somali troops. A spokesperson for Somalia's insurgents warned that they would dispatch jihadists inside Kenya if the training starts.
Authorities increase security in Kampala in response to recent terror alert

According to reports on 7 October 2008, authorities have increased security in Kampala in response to a terror alert issued by security forces on 2 October. There is an increased security presence at government buildings and foreign embassies, as well as in public places, including at hotels, taxi stands, bus stations, shopping malls and markets. Reports indicate that the increased measures include body, luggage and vehicle searches. A hotline has also been set up for the public to report suspicious activity. The Ugandan police issued the alert on 2 October in response to threats of possible terrorist attacks by groups associated with al-Qaeda; authorities, however, did not specify the nature of threats that prompted the alert. The move comes two weeks after Kenyan authorities confiscated a laptop belonging to Fazul Abdul Mohammed, the suspected mastermind behind the 1998 U.S. Embassy bombings in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam.
Shootout in Nairobi

On 14 July 2008 a shootout occurred outside the Holiday Inn Hotel and Mayfair Casino in Nairobi. Five people were killed, including two employees of either the hotel or the casino and three suspected robbers. The incident occurred in the Westlands area of Nairobi.
