Ash from volcanic eruption affects flights

17 Jun 2009
Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways have advised that several flights to the United States and Europe were delayed due to dangerous ash clouds that affected the airspace after a volcanic eruption in the Kuril Islands. Both airlines postponed flights for more than four hours in order to alter routes to avoid the Sarychev Peak volcano airspace in Russia. The volcano, which began erupting on 15 June, has continued to affect flights since that time.
