Aircraft passengers & crew taken hostage at Montego Bay

20 Apr 2009
The hijacker of a CanJet charter aircraft at Montego Bay's Sangster International Airport surrendered to police officers on the morning of 20 April 2009. The armed man forced his way onto the aircraft at approximately 2200 local time (0300 GST) on 19 April, taking all 182 people on board the Boeing 737 aircraft hostage. The man released all of the passengers approximately a half an hour later after demanding money, but continued to hold the crewmembers hostage until he surrendered. The man demanded to be taken to Cuba. There were no reports of injuries, though there have been unconfirmed reports that a shot was fired near the aircraft at the beginning of the hijacking. Flight 918 was scheduled to depart for Halifax, Canada, with a stop in Santa Clara, Cuba. Most of the people on board were Canadian citizens. The passengers have been taken to hotels; the charter airline plans to send another aircraft to Montego Bay to transport the passengers back to Canada.
