Transportation strike causes widespread disruption

Widespread traffic disruptions were reported on 7 July 2008 as transit workers stage a 24-hour strike related to talks regarding contract renewals. The strike has forced the cancellation of thousands of bus, tram and subway services throughout the country. Railway workers began their strike in the evening of 6 July, while transport workers began their actions on the morning of 7 July. Specific strike times vary by city, but union representatives stated that rush hour services will continue for the morning and evening commutes. In Rome, the strike is taking place from 0830 to 1700 local time and then from 2000 to the end of the day. Air transport workers were originally scheduled to take part in the action but have delayed their strike until at least 18 July.
