Train carrying liquified gas derails & explodes

30 Jun 2009
On the evening of 29 June 2009 one or possibly two coaches of a train carrying liquefied petroleum gas derailed and exploded while approaching the station in Viareggio, which is located approximately 220 miles north of Rome. The train was en route from La Spezia to Pisa when the incident occurred around midnight local time. The explosion caused significant structural damage to buildings near the tracks, and flames quickly spread to houses in the surrounding areas. At least 14 fatalities and 50 injuries were reported. Emergency workers continue to work on the scene, and there is concern that additional gas tanks could explode. The reason for the derailment is being investigated, with track damage and a technical malfunction with the train's brakes all being considered. The rail line remains blocked.
