Public transport strike

A public transport strike is scheduled to take place throughout Italy on 9 July 2010. The strike will affect local bus, metro and tram services, as well as national rail routes. Minimum rail services will be guaranteed, but rail workers will be on strike from 2100 local time on 8 July to the same time on 9 July. Local transport service strikes will vary by city, with services in place for rush hour. In Rome, the public transport will be in service until 0830 local time in the morning and from 1700 to 2000 local time in the evening, with workers on strike the remainder of the time. The unions CGIL, CISL and UIL called the strike to protest the national transport workers’ contract, which expired in 2007 and has not yet been renewed. Italian journalists are also going on strike on 9 July over a separate issue, and only limited news media services will be available.
