High tides flood Venice

02 Dec 2008
Venice was affected by extensive flooding on 1 December 2008 after high tides of more than 5 ft/1.5 m burst the city's canals. Water levels in central areas of the city, including St Mark's Square, were the highest, and reports indicate that 40 percent of the city's historic buildings have been affected. The water receded during the afternoon hours, but is expected to rise again on the morning of 2 December. City officials have warned tourists to avoid the city and have urged locals to stay indoors. Although flooding is common in the city, this has reportedly been the worst case in 22 years.
