BOMB ATTEMPT ON MILAN ARMY BARRACKS

A Libyan national attempted to bomb the Santa Barbara army barracks in Milan at approximately 0745 local time today. The blast injured the attacker, who lost a hand, and one soldier, who was slightly wounded by flying glass shards. Soldiers stopped the man as he was attempting to enter the compound though the main gate while carrying what is said to have either been a briefcase or a toolbox that contained the homemade bomb. The man then detonated the bomb while shouting an unidentified statement in Arabic. The blast caused only minor damage to the facility, as the attacker was prevented from getting close to any of the buildings. It is not clear what prompted the attack, but police officials are calling it an "isolated act."
