Unions of the Italian airline Alitalia participated in last-resort talks with the government and CAI, an investor group involved in plans to save the airline, on 11 September 2008. The airline's bankruptcy commissioner has extended a deadline for a final decision from 11 September to 12 September; if the negotiations are not successful, he has threatened to cancel labour contracts and close the airline. Pilots and flight attendants have not agreed to plans that would involve layoffs and a reduction of salaries and benefits. Approximately 200 Alitalia workers staged a protest outside the Labour Ministry during the meeting.
