Alitalia bankruptcy commissioner has extended a deadline for a final decision from 11 September to 12 September

11 Sep 2008
Unions of the Italian airline Alitalia participated in last-resort talks with the government and CAI, an investor group involved in plans to save the airline, on 11 September 2008. The airline's bankruptcy commissioner has extended a deadline for a final decision from 11 September to 12 September; if the negotiations are not successful, he has threatened to cancel labour contracts and close the airline. Pilots and flight attendants have not agreed to plans that would involve layoffs and a reduction of salaries and benefits. Approximately 200 Alitalia workers staged a protest outside the Labour Ministry during the meeting. Although no concrete plans have been announced, there are rumors that pilots and other Alitalia workers could be planning to strike in the coming days. Meanwhile, reports also indicate that delays in ground services are possible at Rome's Fiumicino International Airport (LIRF/FCO) on 11 September due to meetings being held by Alitalia workers and European Avia Service.
