60 killed in suicide bombing
24 Apr 2009
On 24 April 2009 two suicide bombers detonated their explosive vests outside the gates of the Imam Moussa al-Kadim shrine, an important Shiite shrine located in the Kadhimiya neighborhood of Baghdad; the bombings killed at least 60 people and injured more than 125 others, the majority of whom were Iranian pilgrims. One day earlier, on 23 April, bombings occurred in both Baghdad and Mugdadiya; the first incident took place in central Baghdad, where a suicide bomber infiltrated a group of people gathered to wait for the distribution of relief supplies; a second suicide bombing occurred near Muqdadiya (located in the Diyala province) and may have targeted Iranian pilgrims at a restaurant. The two bombings combined killed more than 90 people and injured many others.
